Your Role
Motivation of the work Turning today’s research into tomorrow’s applications - together With a clear focus on user needs, the ZEISS Innovation Hub @ KIT explores new technology and application fields, enabling the transformation of ideas into innovations. Here, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and ZEISS employees meet at eye level and practice an open-innovation culture. For our team of researchers and engineers, we seek for a student to support our research and experiments for optical sensing, with a focus on smart instruments & optical coherence tomography (OCT) for medical robotics.

- Develop a cutting-edge proof-of-concept demonstrator for a smart instrument, utilizing multiple optical sensing modalities to enable medical robotics for vitreoretinal surgical applications
- Design and setup a proof-of-concept optical system and detection hardware to translate into a smart sensing device
- Utilize machine-learning algorithms to analyze data generated by optical sensing-based hardware and software
- Screen scientific literature to tailor your solution to drive the state-of-the-art with your research project
- Conduct and evaluate experiments based on free space and fiber based optical systems
Your Profile
- A bachelor’s and are enrolled in a master’s program in engineering, computer science, physics, or similar, preferably with a specialization in optics & photonics
- Good understanding of the fundamentals of optics and smart instruments
- Programming knowledge in at least one of the following: Python, Matlab or C/C++
- First hands-on experience with optical systems and signal processing algorithms
- Ideally experience in the development and integration of data acquisition electronics and scanners
- Ideally experience in fiber based or free space optical benchtop systems
- Excellent organization, problem-solving & communication skills (English and/or German)
- Passion for innovation and enthusiasm for new technologies as well as motivation to work in agile, interdisciplinary teams
